Almost a year ago to the day I quickly sent off a request to Killer covers to design my book cover. All I had at this point was a title, nothing more. My hope was that
they would miraculously get it finished and sent back to me in time for Gerry (my husband) to see it before he passed away. I had this very strong need for him to know I would keep his memory alive in a book, not just in our hearts.
The title of the book is Unwavering Strength – which is in process and I will dedicate it to his memory, after all he was exactly that “Unwavering Strength” as he watched one relative after another die from cancer, only to know that was going to be his fate, very soon.
And as fate would have it (or whatever you want to call it) the book cover arrived in my inbox at 1 am on April 10th and I opened it on my tablet and showed it to him. 5 hours later he was gone.
What I have decided is that the proceeds from the book will go to families facing cancer. No one should ever have to battle cancer and be concerned with their finances.
I decided to announce it at Gerry’s Celebration of Life. And the response was excellent, I couldn’t be happier, his memory would live on! Within a couple of days I received a call from Rhonda (Gerry’s niece) and she asked for further info about the book? What were my plans? Did I have any intention of doing fundraisers? I hadn’t actually thought about it, but “hell yes”. “What about if we hold a golf tournament in their honor (Gerry and his two sisters’ )?” Let’s give the proceeds to other families going through cancer who need financial support. Count me in!!! I couldn’t say “yes” fast enough.
The 1st Annual G.E.M. Charity Golf tournament was held on September 7, 2012. G.E.M stands for Gerry, Evelyn and Marlene! It was the most rewarding experience I have had. And no doubt was a very important part of my healing. We worked our butts off and had many, many folks come up and offer to support and provide and volunteer and participate What a wonderful success that tournament was.
As good fortune would have it we are holding our 2nd Annual G.E.M. Charity Golf tournament, scheduled for September 6th, 2013. We have chosen one of the families we are going to sponsor. And what a remarkable man he is, his name is Mark Lewis and I am honored that he is allowing us to share his story. It honestly is worth the time to read his blog http://livestronger.blog.ca. He is in a battle for his life right now fighting angio sarcoma and he has a wife and two small boys who he absolutely adores. Thank you Mark for allowing us to be such a small part of your journey.
We would love for you to join us in a game of golf, learn more here http://s451732699.onlinehome.us/unwaveringstrength and I will see you next week!
